Golf cart vs. LSV: why the difference matters
Florida law treats a golf cart (top speed under 20 mph, operated on designated paths and approved roads) very differently from a low-speed vehicle (LSV) (20–25 mph, street-legal). LSVs must be registered and insured like motor vehicles, including PIP and property damage liability. Many of the carts sold in and around Wellen Park today are technically LSVs. If yours has a license plate — or should — you have a legal insurance requirement, not just a smart-to-have.
What golf cart insurance covers
- Liability — if your cart injures someone or damages property (the big one: imagine a guest or grandchild at the wheel)
- Collision — damage to your cart from an accident
- Comprehensive — theft, fire, storm damage, vandalism
- Medical payments — injuries to you and your passengers
- Accessories — custom wheels, lift kits, enclosures, sound systems
The homeowners-policy myth
Some homeowners policies extend limited liability to a golf cart used on your own property or on the golf course — and stop there. The cart path to Downtown Wellen? The neighborhood loop? Often not covered. Given how affordable standalone cart coverage is, guessing isn't worth it. Bring us your cart's specs (or just a photo of it) and we'll tell you exactly what you need — usually in one phone call. While you're at it, pair it with your homeowners and auto coverage and keep everything with one local team.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is golf cart insurance required in Florida?
For a true golf cart (under 20 mph), insurance generally isn't state-required — but coverage gaps make it strongly recommended. For a street-legal LSV (20–25 mph), registration and insurance are required by Florida law.
Doesn't my homeowners policy cover my golf cart?
Sometimes, but usually only in limited situations — on your own property or on a golf course. Riding to Downtown Wellen or around the neighborhood is often outside that protection. We'll check your specific policy.
How much does golf cart insurance cost?
It's typically one of the most affordable policies we write. The exact premium depends on the cart's value, whether it's an LSV, and the coverages you choose — call us and we can usually quote it same-day.
Are passengers covered if there's an accident?
Medical payments coverage can help with injuries to you and your passengers, and liability protects you if others are hurt. We'll make sure both are sized for how your family actually uses the cart.
